Augsburg Customs officials seize contraband during motorway checks

The Augsburg Main Customs Office (Hauptzollamt Augsburg) conducted a multi-day operation targeting holiday travelers returning via the A8 motorway. During the inspection of over 250 vehicles, officials identified nearly 80 violations.

Authorities initiated approximately 40 criminal proceedings, including investigations into suspected tax evasion and violations of weapons and explosives laws. Seized items included 10,000 cigarettes, three items prohibited under the Weapons Act, and five items prohibited under the Explosives Act.

The operation resulted in the assessment of approximately 36,000 euros in import duties, including customs and import turnover tax. Additionally, security deposits totaling roughly 10,000 euros were collected from suspects residing abroad to cover potential fines and legal costs.
