August 2026 Astronomical Events Highlight Six‑Planet Alignment and Eclipse

Mid‑northern latitudes will experience a series of notable sky‑watching events in August 2026. On August 12, six planets will line up before sunrise, followed later that day by a total solar eclipse visible across the United States and southern Canada. The same night, a new moon will provide dark conditions for the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, offering a prime opportunity for visual observers and photographers.

Additional highlights include a deep partial lunar eclipse on the night of August 27‑28, when about 94 % of the Moon will be immersed in Earth’s umbra, and a Venus‑crescent Moon conjunction on August 16. The Andromeda Galaxy will be well placed near the northeastern horizon early in the month, and Mars will travel through winter constellations, pairing with the waning Moon on August 9. The University of Minnesota is organising public viewing sessions at its Duluth and Twin Cities campuses for several of these events.
