August 8 Historical Milestones: Battle of Britain and German Debt Relief

On 8 August 1940 the Battle of Britain began when the German Luftwaffe launched bombing raids on British cities. British forces shot down 31 German aircraft, and the United Kingdom and Free France signed a mutual‑defence pact.

On 8 August 1953, in London, the London Debt Agreement was signed, cancelling a large portion of Germany’s pre‑war debt. Greece participated in the negotiations, and the settlement is credited with helping launch West Germany’s post‑war economic recovery.
