August Hanning arrested on suspicion of espionage and high treason

August Hanning, the former head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) from 1998 to 2005, has been arrested on suspicion of high treason, espionage, and the disclosure of state secrets. The 80-year-old former official was detained near Münster, Germany, following investigations that uncovered a massive leak of classified information.

Prosecutors allege that Hanning acquired approximately 2,000 classified documents over a period of 16 years. These documents were reportedly provided by Manfred D., a former high-ranking BND official and chief of staff, who allegedly received payments in exchange for the digital files. Hanning is accused of using this intelligence to benefit his private consulting business and potentially providing analyses to foreign intelligence services, with investigations exploring possible links to Azerbaijan and China.

In addition to the espionage charges, Hanning’s business activities have come under scrutiny. He was an associate in the Romanian defense consultancy firm IDA International Defence Advisory SRL, alongside former Romanian state secretary Andrei Ignat. The scandal has caused significant political fallout in Germany, prompting calls for a complete investigation into how high-ranking former officials utilize their intelligence expertise in the private sector and highlighting vulnerabilities within the BND during a period of heightened geopolitical tension.
