August Hanning arrested on espionage and treason charges

August Hanning, the former President of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) from 1998 to 2005, has been arrested and placed in pretrial detention on charges of espionage, treason, and the disclosure of state secrets.

Prosecutors allege that Hanning acquired approximately 2,000 classified BND documents between 2010 and 2022. These documents were reportedly provided by his former office head, Manfred D., who remained at the agency after Hanning’s departure. The investigation suggests Hanning used this sensitive information to benefit his private security consulting business.

Authorities are also investigating whether Hanning shared intelligence with foreign entities. Reports suggest potential links to a Chinese intelligence officer, specifically retired General Wang Jianzheng, and possible connections to Azerbaijani intelligence. The scale of the leak has raised significant concerns among international partners, including the UK’s MI6 and US intelligence agencies, regarding the potential compromise of shared data and field agents.

In response to the scandal, the German Parliamentary Control Panel (PKGr) has launched an ad-hoc investigation to examine structural and organizational vulnerabilities within the BND.
