August Hanning, former German intelligence chief, detained for espionage
German authorities have detained August Hanning, the former president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) from 1998 to 2005, in connection with a major espionage investigation. The Federal Prosecutor's Office is investigating Hanning on charges including high treason, obtaining state secrets, and acting as a spy.
Investigators suspect that Hanning obtained approximately 2,000 confidential documents after leaving the BND. It is alleged that Hanning, through his private consultancy firm, used these documents for paid clients or sold them to a foreign power. A former collaborator, identified as Manfred D., who served as Hanning’s chief of staff and later worked within the intelligence service, has also been detained. Authorities suspect Manfred D. provided the classified information in exchange for money.
While some reports suggest the documents may have been sold to Azerbaijan, investigators are working to identify the specific foreign power involved. The case has raised significant concerns regarding the security and custody of highly classified information within the BND, with potential consequences including leadership changes within Germany’s intelligence apparatus.
