Augusta prison escapee Marco D’Angelo captured in Messina
Marco D’Angelo, a 38-year-old inmate from Messina, has been captured in a residence in the Messina province following his escape from the Augusta/Brucoli detention center in Sicily. D’Angelo, who was serving an 11-year and 8-month sentence for drug trafficking, managed to evade security on Tuesday, August 25. Investigators believe he may have escaped by hiding among waste disposal bags and potentially exploited a shift change in personnel.
His role within the prison, working in the “sopravvitto” service which manages food and comfort items for inmates, provided him with greater freedom of movement, which authorities are currently investigating as a factor in the escape. The Prosecutor's Office of Siracusa, led by Sabrina Gambino, has opened an investigation to determine the exact methods used and to identify any potential accomplices, both inside and outside the facility.
The incident has reignited intense debate regarding the systemic crisis in the Italian prison system. Officials and unions have highlighted severe overcrowding at the Augusta facility, which holds 476 inmates despite a capacity of only 267.
