Augusto César Belluscio, former Argentine Supreme Court Justice, dies at 96

Augusto César Belluscio, a prominent Argentine jurist and former justice of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, has died at the age of 96.

Belluscio joined the Supreme Court in 1983 following the return of democracy under the presidency of Raúl Alfonsín. He served on the tribunal for over two decades until his resignation in 2005. During his tenure, particularly in the 1990s, he was noted for distancing himself from the so-called ‘automatic majority’ of the court.

One of his most significant rulings was the 1999 Fayt case, which determined that the 75-year age limit established by the 1994 constitutional reform did not apply to then-justice Carlos Fayt. Belluscio eventually resigned from the court as he approached that same age limit, citing ethical reasons regarding the precedent he had helped establish.

A graduate of the University of Buenos Aires, Belluscio was highly regarded as an expert in Civil and Family Law, maintaining a distinguished career in both the judiciary and academia.
