Augusto Cury declines to endorse Lula or Bolsonaro for second round

Augusto Cury, the Avante candidate who finished third in the first round of the Brazilian presidential election, has announced he will not endorse either Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva or Flávio Bolsonaro for the second round. Cury, who received approximately 3.44 million votes (2.89% of valid votes), stated he will maintain total silence regarding the final two candidates and has prohibited his campaign from declaring support for either side.

Cury also expressed his intention to leave political life, stating he has a “100% conviction” that he will not continue in politics. Despite his exit from the race, he remains a proponent of several structural reforms, including the abolition of presidential reelection, fixed terms for Supreme Court justices, and the adoption of a semi-presidential system.

Other defeated candidates have also signaled neutrality or specific stances. Renan Santos (Missão) refused to support either candidate, while the PSD party has allowed its members to decide their own alliances. In contrast, Romeu Zema (Novo) reaffirmed his support for Flávio Bolsonaro, stating he will oppose the PT in the second round.
