Aukštumala bog in Lithuania features updated nature trail
The Aukštumala bog, located in the Nemunas Delta within the Kintai forest district, has seen the recent renewal of its educational nature trail. This ecosystem is recognized for its significant biological diversity and historical scientific importance.
In 1902, German botanist Carl Albert Weber published a monograph dedicated to Aukštumala, which is considered the world's first scientific monograph focused on a single raised bog. The work detailed the bog's vegetation, structure, and formation processes, marking a milestone in the field of peatland science.
The updated wooden trail, maintained by the Directorate of the Curonian Spit Protected Area, allows visitors to explore the interior of the bog and observe its unique landscape, including sphagnum moss carpets and various shrubs.
