AUKUS project faces public scrutiny and industrial shifts

The AUKUS public inquiry, initiated by civil society groups including The Australian Peace and Security Forum, has received over 1,000 submissions regarding the nuclear submarine alliance between Australia, the US, and the UK. An analysis of the first 200 submissions indicates significant public skepticism, with only six expressing support for the project. The inquiry aims to examine the strategic impact, costs, safety, environment, and transparency of the arrangement, with a report expected in early November 2026.

On the industrial front, the AUKUS project is expected to drive significant economic activity in Western Australia through submarine sustainment. While construction receives primary attention, sustainment—encompassing maintenance, repairs, and logistical support—typically accounts for approximately 70 percent of expenditure in major defense programs. The project is projected to require 10,000 workers in Henderson, potentially impacting local labor and material supplies. Starting next year, US Virginia Class and UK Astute Class submarines are scheduled to rotate through HMAS Stirling as part of the Submarine Rotational Force-West.
