AUKUS security partnership demonstrates resilience five years after launch

Five years after its inception, the AUKUS trilateral security partnership between Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom has demonstrated significant political resilience despite changes in government and shifting geopolitical landscapes.

The partnership was established following Australia's decision to abandon a $90-billion conventional diesel-electric submarine program in favor of acquiring nuclear-powered, conventionally armed submarines. This strategic shift was driven by the need for increased stealth and stamina to counter China's rapid military expansion and naval presence in the Pacific.

Despite concerns regarding the reliability of the United States and the potential for isolationist policies under the Trump administration, AUKUS has remained intact. The alliance aligns with a broader shift in defense planning, where allies are increasingly expected to take greater responsibility for their own conventional defense capabilities in response to a heightened global security environment.
