AUKUS undersea warfare capabilities advance through technology tests and war games
Military exercises and technological tests are advancing AUKUS undersea warfare capabilities. At RIMPAC 2026, L3Harris successfully tested its Rock Lobster deployable underwater acoustic communication relay system. Developed in collaboration with the Royal Australian Navy and the Defence Science and Technology Group, the system demonstrated interoperability with U.S. Navy capabilities.
In Canberra, the Australian Defence Force is participating in three-day war games organized by the Hudson Institute and the United States Studies Centre. These exercises simulate a regional conflict with China and model the strategic use of U.S. nuclear-powered submarines and future AUKUS-acquired vessels. Participants include personnel from the Australian Defence Force, the United States, and Japan, alongside civilian experts.
