Aung San Suu Kyi meets ICRC representative in Naypyitaw
On 3 August 2026, Aung San Suu Kyi, the detained former Myanmar leader, met Arnaud de Baecque, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) resident representative, in the capital Naypyitaw. The government released four photographs showing Suu Kyi shaking hands with de Baecque and later cutting a birthday cake inscribed “Happy Birthday Aunty Suu 19 June 2026”.
The meeting is the first publicly confirmed contact between Suu Kyi and a foreign official since the military coup that ousted her government in February 2021. She has been held under house arrest since April 2026 after the junta‑led president Min Aung Hlaing commuted her sentence by one‑sixth. Her original 33‑year term was reduced to 27 years and then to about 18 years remaining. The ICRC confirmed that its delegate visited Suu Kyi and spoke with her privately, though it did not disclose details of the discussion. Her son Kim Aris said the images give his family “a reason to hope” about her wellbeing.
