Aung San Suu Kyi receives package from King Charles III in Myanmar

Myanmar’s military-backed government has released rare new photos of detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, showing her receiving a package from King Charles III of the United Kingdom. The 81-year-old Nobel laureate was met by officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs in the capital, Naypyitaw, to receive two books regarding soil, a sealed envelope, and sealed diplomatic correspondence.

In the announcement, Myanmar authorities referred to Suu Kyi as a ‘special female prisoner,’ a term used for the first time to describe the pro-democracy advocate. The images show her seated in a wood-paneled room during a meeting that reportedly lasted approximately 10 minutes. This marks her first publicized meeting with a foreign official since being ousted in a 2021 military coup.

Critics and family members have reacted with caution. Kim Aris, Suu Kyi’s son, welcomed the gesture from the British monarch but warned that the military regime should not exploit such selective disclosures to improve its international image. The coup that deposed Suu Kyi triggered an ongoing civil war that has resulted in over 100,000 deaths, according to the conflict monitor ACLED.
