Gheorghe Piperea named AUR candidate for Bucharest Mayor

The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) has officially designated MEP Gheorghe Piperea as its candidate for the Mayor of Bucharest in the 2028 local elections. The announcement was made by party leader George Simion, who noted that the early designation is intended to allow ample time for public debate and the development of an administrative project for the capital.

Piperea, a lawyer and university professor with a background in commercial law and insolvency, described himself as a “transparent” figure with no vulnerabilities. He emphasized that the long lead time before the 2028 vote is necessary to understand the complex issues facing Bucharest and to find potential solutions through public consultation.

George Simion stated that the party intends to present candidates for other important local administration roles and county council presidencies in the coming months. He also expressed hope that the Bucharest elections might occur earlier than scheduled, citing ongoing legal investigations involving the current mayor.
