AUR party rejects government consultations in Romania

Political tensions are escalating in Romania as the AUR party refuses to participate in government formation consultations convened by President Nicușor Dan. AUR leader George Simion has declined to attend the consultations at Cotroceni, labeling the president a “usurper” and stating that his delegation will demand early elections instead.

The standoff follows President Dan’s assertion that AUR’s involvement in government could negatively impact Romania’s security relations and its standing with the European Union. In response, AUR senator Petrișor Peiu accused the president of violating the Constitution by attempting to dictate which parties are permitted to participate in governance.

Meanwhile, the PSD has requested a mandate for a new prime minister, with Sorin Grindeanu identified as a nominee. The political deadlock remains centered on the status of Călin Georgescu, as AUR leadership maintains they will not support any government until Georgescu is released from prison.
