AUR proposes parliamentary inquiry into illegal migration and labor exploitation
The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) has initiated a legislative project to establish a parliamentary inquiry commission to investigate illegal migration and the treatment of foreign workers in Romania. The proposal aims to examine the management of migration by authorities, the legal regime for foreigners, and instances of criminality and exploitation involving non-EU citizens.
The initiative cites a rise in foreign workers entering Romania between 2022 and 2026, alongside documented cases of illegal residence, fraudulent border crossings, and human trafficking. Specifically, the project notes that in 2024, 2,389 cases were recorded where foreign citizens attempted to leave Romania illegally. In the first seven months of 2025, approximately 400 individuals were detected attempting illegal crossings at the Romanian-Hungarian border.
The commission would seek to identify legislative and administrative vulnerabilities, evaluate the performance of the General Inspectorate for Immigration and the Border Police, and investigate allegations of forced labor, physical aggression, and the illegal withholding of documents. The project also intends to scrutinize employers and intermediaries involved in the recruitment of foreign laborers to protect national security and public order.
