Aura Elementary School moves to remote learning due to flea infestation
Aura Elementary School in Elk Township, Gloucester County, has transitioned to remote learning due to a flea infestation. The issue was first identified by staff in the school's media center.
Students have been out of the building since September 17, when crews began applying pesticides as part of a deep cleaning process. Before moving to virtual instruction, the district attempted to hold classes at alternate locations, including a local church and the Total Turf sports complex in Pitman. However, county officials instructed the district to implement remote learning instead of continuing off-site classes.
Principal Briean Madden stated that teachers and support staff are working to keep students engaged through live lessons or asynchronous assignments. There is currently no confirmed timeline for when students will be permitted to return to the school building.
