Aurelio Valdez Alcántara ordered to trial for bribery
In the Dominican Republic, former prosecutor Aurelio Valdez Alcántara has been ordered to face trial for allegedly soliciting and receiving a US$10,000 bribe. The bribe was reportedly linked to an investigation involving the National Health Insurance (Senasa). Judge Raymundo Mejía of the First Court of Instruction in the National District approved the trial and modified Valdez Alcántara’s detention, replacing preventive prison with a RD$1 million economic guarantee, travel restrictions, and periodic reporting requirements.
The case has highlighted broader systemic issues within the Dominican judicial system. Judge Ysis Berenice Muñiz Almonte noted that courts struggle to implement alternative measures to preventive prison due to economic and logistical barriers, such as the high cost of electronic monitoring. Meanwhile, other judicial figures, including candidates for the Supreme Court of Justice, have addressed the issue of judicial backlog and the need for procedural reforms to improve efficiency.
In separate legal developments, a man facing charges for the sexual assault and murder of a teenager in Navarrete has been ordered to undergo one year of preventive prison. Additionally, legal debates continue regarding the Jet Set nightclub collapse case, where defense attorneys are contesting efforts to reclassify the charges from involuntary homicide to willful homicide.
