Aurich, Germany confronts lightning‑induced fires and spate of traffic offences

Severe thunderstorms struck the Aurich district over a weekend, producing multiple lightning strikes that ignited roof fires in the Middels area. Fire crews from Aurich, Wittmund and neighboring municipalities quickly contained the blazes, prevented further spread, and cleared storm‑damaged trees and debris across several villages.

During the same week, police in Aurich and Wittmund reported a series of traffic‑related offences. Authorities secured an abandoned container of used oil on a green strip, launched an investigation into its source, and pursued two motorcyclists after a high‑speed chase, arresting one and issuing a vehicle seizure. Additional incidents included a drunk e‑bike crash with a 2.5 ‰ blood‑alcohol level, several motorists stopped for alcohol consumption, a driver clocking over 190 km/h on the B436, and two hit‑and‑run collisions. Police also investigated a burglary of an empty house in Norden.
