Auriga Space tests electromagnetic drone interceptor

Auriga Space has completed the first field test of Hermes, an electromagnetic launcher designed to intercept drones using low-cost projectiles. The testing took place in the Mojave Desert under field conditions, where the system successfully launched projectiles at speeds exceeding Mach 1.

Unlike traditional systems that rely on chemical propellants, Hermes uses electricity to accelerate projectiles, aiming to address the economic mismatch between inexpensive unmanned aircraft and costly interceptors. The system is designed for high mobility, fitting within a standard 10-foot shipping container and operating independently via internal batteries and solar panels. According to CEO Winnie Lai, the successful deployment in a remote environment demonstrates that future air defense can be logistically unconstrained and rapidly deployed.
