Aurizon opens $60 million Kewdale freight terminal in Perth

Aurizon has officially opened a new $60 million intermodal terminal in Kewdale, Perth, to enhance freight capacity between Western Australia and the eastern states. The 18.8-hectare purpose-built facility is designed to accommodate double-stacked interstate freight trains up to 1.8 kilometers in length. This capability allows for loading and unloading without the need to shunt or break apart trains, which is intended to increase speed and efficiency for customers.

The new terminal aims to improve truck access and provide opportunities for co-located logistics and warehousing operations within the precinct. By moving interstate containerized freight to Kewdale, the company also frees up its existing Forrestfield terminal, which has reached capacity. The Forrestfield site will be repurposed to support Aurizon’s expanding national motor-vehicle distribution business.

Deputy Premier and Treasurer Rita Saffioti officially opened the site. Aurizon CEO Andrew Harding noted that the investment is a response to growing consumer demand and the need for more capacity along the critical East-West corridor.
