Auron Tare compares Tirana developments to Cold War espionage

Historian and publicist Auron Tare has drawn a parallel between recent developments in Tirana and Cold War espionage techniques. In a commentary, Tare compares the current situation in Albania to the legendary espionage 'academy' established by Markus Wolf, the former head of East German counterintelligence (STAS).

Wolf was known for training agents in both classic intelligence gathering and the art of seduction to target individuals in sensitive institutions. Tare noted that he had been translating Wolf’s memoirs, ‘The Man Without a Face: Memoirs of a Spy’, into Albanian but decided to suspend the project due to recent local events.

Referring to the current climate in Tirana as the ‘Tirana Academy’, Tare suggests that the ongoing developments in the country may eventually become a subject of study for European intelligence history, implying that the current reality surpasses the sophisticated methods used during the Cold War.
