Aurora Park at Geauga Lake to open on former SeaWorld Ohio site

The City of Aurora has announced that Aurora Park at Geauga Lake, a new public recreation destination, will officially open on October 25, 2026. The project occupies part of the former SeaWorld Ohio property, which has faced decades of closures and abandonment.

The city acquired Geauga Lake and 48 surrounding acres for $5.3 million in December 2024, with redevelopment breaking ground in October 2025. Unlike the original SeaWorld theme park, the new site will not feature roller coasters, killer whales, or dolphin performances. Instead, the park will offer public green spaces, restored buildings, landscaped lawns, and access to the waterfront, including a renovated Sunset Pier.

SeaWorld Ohio originally opened in 1970 as the company’s first location outside of California. Following its sale to Six Flags in 2001 and subsequent ownership changes, the site eventually saw the closure of its amusement rides and water park. The upcoming opening marks the completion of the first phase of the city’s transformation of the site into a community recreation area.
