Aurora sues Swedish state over climate policy in court
The youth-led climate organization Aurora has initiated legal proceedings against the Swedish state in the Stockholm District Court. This marks the first time the state's climate responsibility will be debated in a Swedish court.
Aurora argues that Sweden's current climate policies are insufficient to meet the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The organization claims that the state's inadequate actions threaten the human rights of young people, specifically regarding their right to life and health. Spokesperson Ida Edling stated that Sweden's climate policy must become three times more ambitious than it is currently to align with scientific consensus and international legal obligations.
The court is currently conducting oral preparations to clarify the requirements for evidence in the upcoming trial. This case follows a previous attempt by Aurora to sue the state, which was dismissed by the Supreme Court due to the way the lawsuit was structured.
