Aurora unveils second‑generation autonomous trucks for US freight network

Self‑driving technology company Aurora Innovation has launched its second‑generation driverless Class 8 trucks in the United States. The new vehicles are built on the International LT Series platform and incorporate Aurora’s next‑generation hardware, called Driver 2, which is engineered for up to one million miles of operation. Partner Roush has installed redundant systems and integrated the hardware at an Aurora production facility, enabling a planned annual build rate of about 1,000 trucks.

Aurora’s fleet will be rolled out across its commercial network in the Sun Belt, which currently includes ten driverless routes. The company’s driver system has already logged roughly 440,000 driverless miles. A customer has placed an order for 500 of the new trucks, underscoring commercial momentum. CEO Chris Urmson said the launch “provides the foundation to deliver at scale” and will make the movement of goods safer and more efficient.
