Aurore Bergé sparks controversy over 'great replacement' comments

French Minister Aurore Bergé has sparked political controversy following comments regarding the ‘great replacement’ theory. During a television debate, Bergé described the theory as ‘factually false’ and ‘mendacious,’ arguing that it creates a ‘breeding ground of fear.’ However, she declined to label the theory itself as racist, characterizing it instead as a matter of ‘political debate’ and an issue of freedom of expression.

Her stance drew immediate criticism from political opponents. LFI deputy Thomas Portes denounced her position as ‘absolute shame,’ arguing that the theory cannot be separated from its racial undertones and has historically inspired far-right violence, citing mass shootings in Christchurch, El Paso, and Buffalo. Additionally, deputy Prisca Thévenot reminded the minister that ‘racism is a crime.’

In subsequent remarks, Bergé maintained that the theory does not align with national statistics but cautioned against suppressing the expression of the far right. She suggested that attempting to stifle such discourse could inadvertently strengthen conspiracy theories that allow parties like the National Rally to prosper.
