Ausar Thompson signs $155 million extension with Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons have agreed to a five-year, $155 million rookie-scale contract extension with forward Ausar Thompson. The fully guaranteed deal, which begins with the 2027-28 season, secures one of the league’s premier young defenders as a cornerstone of the franchise’s rebuilding efforts.

Thompson, 23, earned NBA All-Defensive First Team honors last season and finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting. During the 2025-26 regular season, he averaged 9.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and led the NBA with 2.0 steals per game. His defensive impact was also evident in the postseason, where he became the first player since 2020 to record at least 25 steals and 25 blocks in a single playoff run.

With this agreement, Ausar and his twin brother, Amen Thompson of the Houston Rockets, become the first pair of brothers in NBA history to each sign contracts worth at least $100 million. While the Pistons have secured Thompson, they remain in negotiations with restricted free agent center Jalen Duren, who has reportedly held out for a higher valuation than the team’s current offers.
