Auschwitz-Birkenau: WWII structures relocated for Oświęcim bypass

Construction of the Oświęcim bypass in Poland is proceeding with specialized measures to protect the historical landscape of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. To avoid destroying significant World War II era structures, workers are relocating two bunkers and a warehouse used by guards at nearby industrial plants. These objects are being dismantled in sections and will be reassembled in new locations a few dozen meters away from the road.

The 9-kilometer project is designed to be as inconspicuous as possible from the memorial site. Engineering solutions include a low bridge over the Soła River and an earth embankment exceeding 1.5 kilometers in length to minimize visual impact. Additionally, the use of pipe-roofing technology allowed a segment of the road to be installed under railway tracks without interrupting train traffic.
