Auschwitz memorial site sparks outrage over tourist's café complaints

A British tourist, known on TikTok as Lynne or Freespirit666, has sparked widespread international outrage after posting videos complaining about the prices and quality of refreshments at a café near the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial site in Poland.

In her videos, which garnered millions of views, Lynne criticized the cost of a strawberry smoothie and lemonade, totaling approximately £9, and noted a lack of decaffeinated coffee or milk alternatives. She advised future visitors to bring their own food and drinks, contrasting the expensive refreshments with what she called a “bargain” taxi ride to the site.

Social media users and commentators have condemned the posts as deeply insensitive, arguing that focusing on personal comfort and consumer prices is inappropriate at a site where over 1.1 million people were murdered during the Holocaust. Critics noted that the location is a cemetery and a place of mourning, not a tourist attraction. Alex Hearn of Labour Against Antisemitism stated the incident shows how some individuals have “lost touch with the real horror of the Holocaust.”

Lynne defended her actions in follow-up videos, arguing that the café is physically separate from the primary memorial areas and stating, “Nobody died in the café.” A museum representative clarified that the dining area is managed by an external provider.
