AUSSOM faces neutrality test amid Baidoa political and military crisis

A political crisis in Somalia’s South West State is escalating into a military confrontation, placing the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in a delicate position. Following the removal of former South West President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen, a Federal Government-backed administration has taken control of Baidoa. Supporters of Laftagareen have rejected the new leadership, leading to violent clashes between loyalist forces and federal and regional troops on August 17.

The Federal Government has requested AUSSOM assistance as the security situation worsens. An African Union memorandum indicates concerns regarding an expanding relationship between local militias and Al-Shabaab, noting coordinated attacks on Somali military positions near Baidoa. While AUSSOM is authorized to conduct military operations alongside federal forces against Al-Shabaab and affiliated groups, the mission has been directed to maintain political neutrality and avoid involvement in domestic political fighting.

In support of broader security efforts, AUSSOM’s aviation units, including Burundian contingents, continue to provide reconnaissance, medical evacuation, and logistical support to Somali Security Forces. These aerial operations aim to improve situational awareness and protect troops from threats posed by armed groups in conflict-prone sectors.
