Austal USA hosts Vice Admiral Cahill at new West Coast dry dock
Vice Admiral Joseph Cahill, Commander of Naval Surface Forces, visited Austal USA’s West Coast repair and services facility in National City, California. During the visit, Cahill inspected maintenance work being performed on the USS Oakland (LCS 24) within the newly certified Dry Dock Independence.
Austal USA received an $10.8 million Navy contract in August for the emergent maintenance of the USS Oakland. The project involves replacing the ship’s main service diesel generator, a complex task requiring work below the waterline that necessitates the use of the new dry dock facility. The successful docking of the vessel marks a milestone in expanding critical ship repair capacity for the Navy on the West Coast.
