Austin and UT Austin negotiate ownership of Lions Municipal Golf Course
The City of Austin and the University of Texas at Austin are nearing a deal regarding the ownership of the historic Lions Municipal Golf Course, known as “Muny.” The 140-acre course, which opened in 1924, is currently owned by the university and leased to the city on a month-to-month basis.
Under the proposed agreement, ownership of the golf course would transfer from the university to the city. In exchange, the West Austin Youth Association would receive the land where the university's campus currently sits. University officials noted that anonymous donors are facilitating the deal through a large gift to the institution.
Muny holds significant local historical value, having become the first public golf course in the South to voluntarily desegregate in 1950. If approved, the arrangement would amend the 1989 Brackenridge Development Agreement, which governs how the university utilizes land on both sides of Lake Austin Boulevard for private development.
