Austin Ekeler expected to rejoin Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders are expected to sign veteran running back Austin Ekeler to their 53-man roster, pending a physical. The 31-year-old returns to the club where he spent the previous two seasons.

Ekeler is looking to bounce back from a significant injury period, including a ruptured Achilles in 2025 that limited him to just two games last season. He also missed five games in 2024 due to concussions. While he was a key offensive contributor during Washington's run to the NFC Championship Game, his current role is expected to be primarily as depth.

The signing comes as the Commanders seek consistency in a backfield that has struggled over the first three weeks of the season. Ekeler joins Rachaad White, who recently dealt with a shoulder injury, and Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who leads the team in rushing yards. The addition may provide the team with a situational ball-carrier and pass-catcher as they manage injuries to other key players, including quarterback Jayden Daniels.
