Austin ISD Under Legal Pressure and Announces Paredes Middle School Closure

Texas Values is urging the Texas Attorney General to hold Austin Independent School District accountable for alleged violations of the Texas Women’s Privacy Act after a male student was placed in girls’ bathrooms and locker rooms. The district has not responded to the Attorney General’s request for documents, prompting the advocacy group to demand a policy that keeps boys out of girls’ private spaces.

Separately, the Austin ISD Board of Trustees approved an amended turnaround plan that will close Paredes Middle School for the 2026‑27 school year. Students will be reassigned to Bailey and Mendez middle schools, and the district pledged support for families during the transition.

Mary Elizabeth Castle of Texas Values said, “Austin ISD may think they can play hide and seek but we will not rest until we seek justice for the girls…”. Superintendent Matias Segura emphasized the decision was based on student achievement data and the need for “immediate access to learning environments with strong, proven academic momentum.”
