Austin Metcalf’s family receives death threats after murderer’s sentencing in Texas

Austin Metcalf, a 16‑year‑old from Frisco, Texas, was fatally stabbed during a high‑school track meet in April 2025 after a confrontation in a team tent. Karmelo (Carmelo) Anthony was convicted of first‑degree murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison, with eligibility for parole after 17 years.

Following the sentencing, the Metcalf family – mother and twin brother Hunter – began receiving numerous death threats and violent messages, including taunts about Austin’s death, threats against the twin, and statements about vandalising Austin’s grave. The threats have been linked to supporters of Anthony, some of whom clashed outside the courtroom.

The trial featured testimony that Anthony retrieved a knife from his backpack and stabbed Metcalf in the chest after being shoved, despite claims of self‑defence. Anthony’s attorneys said they will appeal, citing the lack of black jurors. A GoFundMe page allegedly set up for Anthony was removed by the platform. The incident has spurred community concern over ongoing violence and the safety of the victim’s family.
