Austin proclaims Hispanic Heritage Month amid community calls for civil rights

The city of Austin held a proclamation to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, an observance running from September 15 to October 15. The event aimed to honor the achievements of the Hispanic community while acknowledging historical and contemporary injustices.

During the ceremony, local leaders, including interim Mayor José ‘Chito’ Vela and State Representative Lulu Flores, addressed recent tensions involving the immigrant community. Specifically, officials referenced an incident in which Wilber Rafael Garces Pérez, a 28-year-old Venezuelan immigrant, was stopped and shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Austin.

Community leaders, including Paul Saldaña of Hispanic Advocates Business Leaders of Austin (HABLA), emphasized the importance of unity and allyship in defending human and civil rights. The incident has prompted local mobilization and increased focus on immigration laws and xenophobic rhetoric ahead of upcoming elections.
