Austin ranked most affordable U.S. metro for solo renters
An analysis by Apartments.com reveals that Austin is the most affordable of the 50 largest U.S. metropolitan areas for individuals living alone, with renters spending just 23.1% of their monthly income on rent.
In contrast, renters in New York face significant financial pressure, spending 52% of their median household income on one-bedroom apartments. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), individuals spending more than 30% of their income on housing are classified as “cost-burdened.”
The study, which utilized 2024 U.S. Census Bureau data and 2025 CoStar Group reports, found that only 24 of the 50 largest U.S. metros allow renters to live alone without exceeding the 30% affordability threshold.
