Auston Matthews is fully committed to Toronto Maple Leafs, says GM

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka has stated that captain Auston Matthews is ‘fully committed’ to the organization. Despite recent speculation regarding trade requests from other players, Chayka emphasized that Matthews is focused on team success and winning with the Maple Leafs.

Matthews currently has two seasons remaining on his contract, which carries a $13.25 million cap hit. While he will be eligible for an extension next July, Chayka noted that the team is not rushing into negotiations, suggesting that ‘a lot can happen in 10 months’ and that the immediate priority is the upcoming regular season.

Chayka highlighted a strong relationship with Matthews and his representative, Judd Moldaver. Analysts suggest that while the team intends to secure Matthews long-term before he reaches unrestricted free agency in 2028, the specific terms of a future deal will likely depend on his scoring performance and the team's playoff success this season.
