Australia Age Pension: Asset rule changes and long-term projections
The Australian Age Pension system is undergoing shifts due to updated asset thresholds and long-term economic projections. Recent changes to asset rules allow single homeowners to own assets up to $333,000 and non-homeowners up to $600,000 to receive the full pension. For couples, the limits are $499,000 for homeowners and $766,000 for non-homeowners. Eligibility is determined by strict income and asset tests administered by Centrelink, which assess all sources of income and ownership interests.
According to the Treasury’s latest Intergenerational Report, the pension system remains fundamentally stable despite projections that the number of retirees will double to nine million. Spending on age and service pensions is expected to decrease from 2.3 per cent of GDP in 2025–26 to 1.8 per cent in 2065–66. This decline is attributed to the expansion of compulsory superannuation and more rigorous means-testing. Consequently, the proportion of seniors receiving a full pension is forecast to drop from just under 40 per cent today to approximately 15 per cent by 2062.
