Australia aged care sector faces workforce and clinical challenges

Australia's aged care sector is facing diverse challenges ranging from workforce stability to clinical efficiency and specialized health needs.

The New South Wales Seniors Oral Health Alliance has been established to advocate for better oral health outcomes for older Australians, aiming to integrate dental care into broader aged care policy.

Regarding labor, Ageing Australia has warned of a dangerous over-reliance on migrant workers, who may comprise up to 40 per cent of the workforce according to the United Workers Union. The organization is calling for permanent visa pathways to mitigate risks from global migration shifts and to help attract domestic staff.

In terms of operational efficiency, Bupa Aged Care is implementing generative artificial intelligence across its 57 care homes. The tool is designed to provide staff with instant access to internal clinical guidance and policies, reducing the time nurses spend on administrative paperwork and allowing more time for direct resident care.
