Australia aged care shortage causes hospital bed block in NSW

New South Wales is facing a severe aged care crisis, with approximately 1,100 older patients remaining in hospital beds despite being medically ready for discharge. This phenomenon, known as bed block, occurs because there are insufficient nursing home placements available for patients requiring long-term support.

The shortage prevents hospitals from admitting new patients into full wards, leading to congestion in emergency departments and on ambulance stretchers. Patients stuck in hospital settings face increased risks of hospital-acquired infections and physical deterioration.

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park described the bed block crisis as perhaps the most significant challenge currently facing the state’s health system, noting that patients are left languishing in hospital beds because there are no alternative facilities to accommodate them.
