Australia allocates significant funding for road safety and repairs

The Australian Government has announced $45.1 million for safety upgrades at 82 Black Spot locations across New South Wales. Of this, over $22.2 million is dedicated to rural NSW roads under the 2026-27 Black Spot Program. The funding will support measures such as traffic lights, safety barriers, roundabouts, and pedestrian crossings in areas with high crash risks. Specific projects include intersection upgrades in Palmers Channel, guardrail installations in Kulnura, and road widening in Bowraville and Macksville.

In Victoria, the state government is redirecting $352 million to repair 500,000 potholes by the end of January. This initiative doubles the previous repair target and is part of a larger $1.04 billion road maintenance allocation for the 2026-27 budget. To fund this, the government is deferring three level crossing removal projects in Highett and Mentone by one year. Premier Ben Carroll stated that the current condition of the road network has fallen short of public expectations and prioritized these repairs to address voter concerns.
