Australia and Japan strengthen critical minerals alliance

Australia and Japan have strengthened their cooperation regarding critical minerals to reduce vulnerabilities in international supply chains. During a visit to Canberra on May 4, 2026, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to announce the decision to elevate critical minerals to a pillar of their economic security relationship.

The agreement expands the Australia-Japan Critical Minerals Partnership, which was originally established in 2022. The updated framework aims to move beyond political cooperation toward greater coordination in investment, financing, technology, and industrial projects, specifically targeting mining, refining, and advanced manufacturing.

This strategic move is driven by concerns over the high global concentration of the production and processing of strategic raw materials. Securing these resources, including rare earths, is considered essential for various high-tech sectors, such as semiconductors, electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy, telecommunications, and defense industries.
