Australia and New Zealand bolster Pacific defense capabilities

New Zealand has signed a NZ$1.65 billion agreement with the United States to acquire five MH-60R Seahawk multi-role maritime helicopters. This acquisition, part of the Defence Capability Plan, includes weaponry, spare parts, and support systems. The new fleet is intended to replace the aging Seasprite helicopters and will be deployed on Anzac-class frigates and offshore patrol vessels to enhance anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare capabilities.

Simultaneously, Australia has launched Project Land 6504, an industry solicitation for a medium-range, ground-based air defense system. The initiative aims to address gaps in the nation's current air defense, which relies heavily on short-range NASAMS regiments. The project seeks a proven system capable of intercepting ballistic missiles during their terminal phase and countering subsonic threats. Vendors from the United States, Europe, Israel, South Korea, and Turkey have expressed interest. The move follows regional security concerns regarding China's military modernization and missile capabilities in the Indo-Pacific.
