Australia identified as safest nation in global catastrophe study

A new study published in the journal ‘Global Challenges’ has identified which countries would have the highest chances of survival in the event of a global catastrophe, such as nuclear war, a major asteroid impact, or a massive volcanic eruption.

Led by Florian Ulrich Jen from the University of Hagen in Germany, researchers categorized threats into three groups: events that block sunlight (nuclear winter or volcanic eruptions), events that destroy global infrastructure (geomagnetic storms or cyberattacks), and biological hazards (infectious diseases). The study notes that the primary cause of mass suffering would likely be secondary effects, including the collapse of trade networks, agricultural failure, and mass famine.

Australia was identified as the most resilient location due to its geographic position and self-sufficiency. Other highly resilient nations include Argentina, Brazil, and New Zealand. The researchers highlighted that the Southern Hemisphere holds advantages, such as fewer active volcanoes and large ocean areas that act as natural climate buffers. Wealthier nations with strong domestic industries that are not heavily dependent on imports also possess higher survival prospects.
