Australia and Nigeria Start Programs to Revive Indigenous Languages

A new Bachelor of Arts major in Kaurna Languages has been launched at an Australian university, aiming to preserve and revitalize the Indigenous language of the Kaurna people. The program is taught by Aboriginal scholars and community leaders and equips graduates for roles in education, government, media and cultural institutions.

In Delta State, Nigeria, the Madonna School for Children with Special Needs partnered with the Wikimedia Foundation and the Igbo Wikimedians Usergroup to train deaf children to record and upload Nigerian Sign Language vocabulary. The project created an open‑access archive of about 100 photos and videos, giving students hands‑on digital‑media skills while documenting the language for global audiences.
