Australia and Vanuatu strengthen policing ties via Nakamal Agreement

The Nakamal Agreement, a treaty between Australia and Vanuatu signed by leaders Anthony Albanese and Jotham Napat, focuses on strengthening policing partnerships rather than military cooperation.

During Senate inquiries, Australian officials clarified that a clause in the agreement prohibiting foreign powers from using Vanuatu for defense bases or infrastructure reflects existing Vanuatu national legislation. Jan Hutton of the foreign affairs department noted that the commitment is a reflection of Vanuatu’s own legislative requirements to ensure its territory does not host foreign military bases.

Under the agreement, Australia intends to increase its policing presence in the Melanesian nation. Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner David McLean stated that the number of Australian police currently stationed in Vanuatu could nearly double. Assistance is expected to cover various areas, including forensics, training, administration, and the development of police infrastructure such as headquarters and stations.
