Australia announces $400 million heavy vehicle reform package
The Australian Government has announced a $400 million heavy vehicle reform package aimed at boosting road freight productivity and facilitating the transition to electric freight vehicles. Following a review by the Productivity Commission, federal, state, and territory treasurers agreed to reforms that could increase Australia’s GDP by up to $4.4 billion annually.
The funding, provided through the National Productivity Fund, is contingent on states and territories implementing specific reforms. Key objectives include streamlining truck permitting, developing a National Automated Access System, and addressing regulatory barriers for zero-emission vehicles. Industry groups, including the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) and the Australian Trucking Association (ATA), have welcomed the move.
Specific focus areas include expanding access for high-productivity vehicles, such as A-doubles, and removing outdated restrictions that hinder electric trucks, such as noise curfews. The EVC noted that the reforms will help reduce reliance on imported diesel and improve fuel security, while the ATA highlighted that increased productivity will help reduce costs for exporters and families.
